Sometimes It's The Little Things

So you’ve spent hours working on your resume, maybe days. You’ve probably read our last blog post on how to perfect it and now it is time to send it off to the HR department of your dream company. But don’t send it just yet. There are some little things you can do that you probably haven’t even thought of, which might give you a tiny edge over another candidate.

A simple way to help your resume stand out is changing the file name to something other than “resume.pdf” or “YourName”.

When you see a posting you might be wondering if you should apply right away or wait until the deadline that is on the posting. Don’t wait. Companies are usually quick to start the process. If you think about a job being vacated with 2 weeks notice and it take time for a posting to get approved and then out on to the sites, the role is probably vacant and the hiring manager desperate for some support; so don’t wait unless it means you are taking the extra time to build a resume and cover letter that is customized to the role. That is more important than being the first one in the inbox.

A simple way to help your resume stand out is changing the file name to something other than “resume.pdf” or “YourName”. Take something from the role or the posting and name your file inline with those. Like if the role is for a marketing analyst, you could do the simple file name of “MarketingAnalyst” or if the posting is light hearted and fun and they say they are looking for a “multi-tasker extraordinaire” don’t be afraid to name your file that. Being creative might just catch the eye of someone and get your file opened first!

A few other simple tips for improving your odds at landing an interview:

  • Do not include a photo unless it specifically asked for. It may actually get you tossed in to the “no” pile
  • Do not mention your age
  • Avoid fancy design (unless of course you are applying to be a designer!)
