Nine reasons why co-working is awesome

With remote working becoming increasingly prevalent, employees and contractors alike have more options when it comes to getting work done outside of the office. Working from home is nice, but it can get boring or lonely. Working from a coffeeshop is fine, but sometimes the din can get distracting. In cases like these, Michelle Bogle likes co-working – and has a bunch of reasons why you might, too.

If you’re relatively new to freelance life, like me, you’ve likely considered joining a local coworking space. But, for those of us just starting out, it may seem like an added expense that you – or your business – are not ready to shoulder. After all, working out of your home or even your favourite coffee shop is “free” – if you don’t count all of those Americanos or iced coffees.

For me, coworking is definitely on the horizon for my freelance business. In my quest to find the right coworking environment to transition into, I’ve learned of a number of benefits along the way.

Here are nine reasons why coworking is awesome:

Creates separation from your work and life

I don’t know about you, but I can hear my laundry calling my name when I’m working from home. And, if the laundry isn’t vying for my attention, it’s something else, like the dishes. I just can’t win some days! However, when you set-up shop in a coworking space, you create a buffer between your home and work life, which can lead to better focus, more creativity and productivity.

It enhances your efficiency and effectiveness

Speaking of productivity, a recent study by the Harvard Business Review shows that people who belong to coworking spaces thrive better than employees who work in regular offices. In fact, those who cowork are often more effective and efficient in their roles thanks to the energy, accountability and positive mindset that a coworking environment generates.

Find camaraderie and inspiration from like-minded individuals

Whether you are a freelancer, an entrepreneur, a small start-up or even a remote employee, working by yourself can be really lonely and isolating – even for an introvert, like me.

By becoming a member of a coworking space, you have instant access to other like-minded individuals who have chosen a unique lifestyle, just like you. They understand the challenges of being a solopreneur and can provide a listening ear (or shoulder) should you hit a road block. Being around other people can also be a real mood-booster and make your days more energizing, fun and brighter.

Coworking creates a positive environment

Coworking spaces are vibrant, supportive communities. They are comprised of highly talented, creative and driven individuals who choose to grow their businesses and themselves in that environment. So even though you may not work directly with your coworking mates, you do have the support of those around you (and vice versa) without the added stress of traditional office politics.

Expand your social network

Over my career, some of my dearest friendships were formed over the studio water cooler. Since transitioning to freelance life, I miss the daily interaction from my “work besties” and meeting new people along the way.

When you set-up shop in a coworking space, you create a buffer between your home and work life, which can lead to better focus, more creativity and productivity.

A coworking space fills this gaps by providing access to fresh faces who may – or may not – have similar interests, hobbies and goals as you. In my research, I’ve also found that many coworking communities have active social committees, which makes meeting new people and trying new experiences a breeze.

Create an instant network of trusted professionals

Just like your social life will get a boost from coworking, so will your professional network. Coworking spaces can connect you to the most relevant people for your business just by turning around in your chair. From potential clients, suppliers or even future business partners, you can make real, concrete connections that propel you and your work further ahead.

Coworking gives you consistency

I don’t know about you, but I’ve become a “regular” at more than one coffee shop. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy having the freedom to work where I want, when I want. But, there is a level of uncertainty with making the café or library your office.

Having a membership at a coworking space (even for just a few days a week) provides consistency and routine, which is something that most freelancers or solopreneurs can benefit from.

Membership has its perks

Just like any membership service, you can expect a lot of perks and access to amenities in a coworking space. This usually includes the basics, like stable, high-speed internet, access to professional meeting spaces, mail service, lockers, fresh coffee and a clean workspace.

But, many coworking communities offer so much more, like gym or fitness facilities, special events, training opportunities and other perks that enhance your professional and personal lives. All of this is wrapped up into an affordable monthly cost, which is likely cheaper than your current three-Starbucks-a-day habit.

More cost-effective and flexible than renting an office for one

Speaking of affordability, coworking spaces are a great option for freelancers, entrepreneurs and start-ups looking for cost-effective and flexible space. Unlike traditional office rentals that require a long-term lease and other factors that drain your time, money and energy, coworking spaces allow you to rent your workspace for a few days, weeks or months, so you can focus on what matters the most – your work.

So, there you have it – coworking looks pretty awesome, doesn’t it? Even if you are unsure if it’s the right set-up for you, you can always give it a try without having to make a big commitment or financial investment.
