Scope

The Web & New Media Team is looking for a collaborative, experienced and passionate Web Specialist to help responsibly grow the City’s 10+ websites, such as surrey.ca, surreylibraries.ca, surrey.ca/canadaday and surrey.ca/childrensfestival.

The Web Specialist is a role which combines communications and technical expertise to develop, sustain and grow the City’s web-based technology.

We are a small and collaborative team which manages the City of Surrey websites, social media channels and digital advertising. Fuelled by caffeine and sugar, we keep up with best practices and educate staff across the City on digitally communicating to achieve business and customer goals.

Responsibilities

The City’s Web Specialist will:

  • Lead and be part of multiple, ongoing digital projects with internal and external clients
  • Maintain multiple vendor relationships and assist with vendor selection
  • Provide guidance and consultation on CMS selection, maintenance, growth and application (Open Text Red Dot, Drupal 7 and 8, Wordpress are the most commonly used CMSs at the City)
  • Work with other team members (eg, Web Editor, User Experience Designers, Marketing Coordinators, Graphic Designers) to identify and execute on improvements to front and back facing content systems
  • Help create digital guidelines, policies and procedures

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must meet these minimum requirements:

  • University graduation in communications or a related field including or supplemented by courses related to website development and maintenance and 5 years’ experience in directly related work, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable knowledge of communications principles, practices, methods and techniques related to the work performed.
  • Considerable knowledge of writing, editing, layout and research principles, methods and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of relevant electronic production practices and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of writing, editing, layout and research principles, methods and techniques.
  • Ability to establish and apply editorial standards and provide advice and guidance to departments.
  • Ability to evaluate website design requirements, recommend and oversee overall framework and functionality, and review content for compliance with editorial guidelines.
  • Ability to assess new web standards and technologies, formulate strategies for enhancement of the websites, and advise on the use of the website to achieve corporate objectives.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance of the websites.
  • Ability to liaise with technical specialists and consultants on website development and technical and operational processes and issues.
  • Ability to lead projects and oversee the work of junior staff and consultants.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
  • You’ll also need to successfully complete a Criminal Record Check.

You are a strong communicator with a passion for finding opportunities to leverage technology to deliver on customer-focused, exciting content experiences. You crave consistency, love seeing things from multiple perspectives and get excited about finding efficiencies and creating easy to use websites for the City of Surrey’s customers.

You bring a strong technical background with a natural ability to communicate with internal and external customers to understand business needs. With your knowledge of best practices for digital communication, you can inspire and educate others on the possibilities and value of employing the right technology/technologies in the right way to meet their needs, and that of their customers.

You also bring knowledge of communication principles, practices, methods and techniques/knowledge of social media channels and are familiar with how to communicate on each medium.
