Rogers Media is looking for an experienced, energetic associate web producer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be an innovative individual who is well-versed in digital media trends and takes great pride in doing things differently. This person must be passionate about unique forms of storytelling, is social-media savvy and adept at using online resources to tell the story better.  At the same time, this person must have a strong foundation of standard journalism best practices who thrives in a busy newsroom, is proficient in CP style and knows what makes a good story. The successful applicant will be a positive role model in transitioning traditional newsrooms to digital-first environments and will be able to illustrate how to grow our brands in a crowded marketplace.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and participate in the writing, editing and publishing of breaking news and feature content

  • Monitor news wires and publish relevant content from a variety of sources, including broadcast

  • Ensure CityNews and 680News sites are always updated with the best local, national and international news that is interesting and important to our audience

  • Be an active voice in developing short- and long-term planning for the sites and newsrooms

  • Be familiar with standard content management tools, including WordPress

  • Be well-versed in social media best practices in terms of distributing content and engaging with visitors through social media

  • Exhibit strong journalism skills in editing, writing and choosing content for our sites

  • Ability to work closely with on-air talent and broadcast/radio writers, editors and producers

  • Familiarity with various analytics tools and an ability to make decisions based on KPIs

  • Stay abreast of industry trends and competitors

  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as required

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • At least five years of newsroom experience in a digital role

  • Journalism degree or diploma (or equivalent)

  • Experience with an enterprise-grade, large-scale CMS

  • A passion for news, online journalism and digital-content creation

  • Knowledge of social media best practices

  • In-depth knowledge of CP style and standard web-based tools like Photoshop, WordPress, Hootsuite and Skype

  • Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS is a definite asset

  • Demonstrated strong production, editorial and storytelling skills

  • The ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
