Detailed Job Description

The Strategic Communications Advisor is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating communications strategies that raise the profile of the NCC among target audiences. The position is responsible for managing media relations and issues management, and for executing tactics for the promotion of NCC initiatives through a variety of communications channels, including social media.

The position represents the NCC in the media, as well as acts as liaison with external partners for the purpose of developing and coordinating communications strategy and activities. The position is responsible for fact-finding and research to identify opportunities for proactive communications, and provides communication advice to clients, senior management and the executive office on all aspects of communications.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Develops, implements and evaluates strategic communications plans in coordination with clients and external partners.

  2. Acts as spokesperson for the NCC in the media.

  3. Formulates corporate messages and ensures they are effectively communicated to the media and the public, including on social media.

  4. Manages media relations and issues management, as well as proactively pitch stories to the media.

  5. Coordinates communications projects, organizes media events and supports NCC public engagement activities by developing communications products and providing strategic communications advice.

  6. Creates, writes and edits communications products for multiple channels, including the website and social media channels.

  7. Researches and analyzes current communication trends in order to identify opportunities for proactive communications.

REQUIREMENTS

  • University diploma in the field of Journalism, Communications, Marketing or a related discipline.

  • Bilingual imperative: English CBC / French CBC.

  • A minimum of 3 years’ professional experience in communications strategy, media relations and issues management.

  • Experience in content creation and promotion for social media channels and web properties.

  • Experience acting as a spokesperson in the media for an organization and coaching experts to act as spokespeople.

  • Experience planning and executing high profile media events.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Of the NCC’s mandate and programs.

  • Of best practices in strategic communications planning.

  • Of the media environment in the National Capital Region.

  • Of best practices for content planning and audience engagement on social media.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Possess a secret clearance.
