The Position

The Marketing Manager will be responsible for the marketing and promotion of titles within a specific discipline in the Higher Education division.   Based out of the head office in Toronto, this position is responsible for working closely with counterparts in editorial and sales management.    The ideal candidate will possess outstanding communication and analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple projects to deadlines. Creative out-of-the-box thinking will be required for long-term success in the Marketing group. Ideas which go beyond traditional industry norms will be developed and executed by Marketing Managers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Planning & Strategy:

  • Develop and execute marketing plans for assigned discipline, analyzing opportunities and problems from a broad perspective - anticipating and planning for reactions from others
  • Develop, manage and execute advertising and promotion plans including print, direct mail, and Internet campaigns for assigned disciplines
  • Focus on strategic and financial goals and measure their success in terms of results achieved

Support Strategic Direction of Sales:

  • Act as a key driver of the sales efforts in assigned discipline and specifically on critical titles
  • Focus on the customer’s requirements (internal and external), providing the highest value products and services which anticipate and exceed the needs, through ongoing improvement and constant measurement of all processes
  • National travel to gain and maintain a market understanding in assigned discipline and to actively participate in presentations to faculty to close business

Research & Product Development:

  • Understand key market trends and issues in assigned discipline, initiate and champion change
  • Assist with new product development by conducting customer research both in person and through focus groups.  Develop and execute other research initiatives as needed.
  • Present new ideas and approaches to keep the organization leading edge in its approaches, process, products and services

Experience and Education

  • University Degree
  • A minimum 3 years marketing experience with a proven track record of success
  • Experience in either working with a direct sales force or previous experience in a sales capacity
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), analytical skills and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to develop and implement innovative projects
  • Creative problem solving and fluency in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
  • Must be a highly motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented individual with strong customer focus and customer service-oriented
  • Possess the ability to work in a team environment as well as working independently
  • Strong time-management skills and competency for handling multiple tasks/projects
  • Must have a valid licence and willingness to travel on a national level
