Job Summary

To provide graphic design, illustration, and layout functions for a variety of print and electronic publishing projects, both editorial and marketing..

Organizational Status

The graphic designer will report to the manager of editorial and production services and will interact and collaborate with other editorial, production, and marketing staff members.

Work Performed

  • responsible for graphic design concepts for books and other printed publications, both covers and interior pages;
  • responsible for graphic design concepts for digital and web publications;
  • lay out publications, print and electronic;
  • input editorial corrections as needed;
  • do photo research and other image research as needed
  • create illustrations and diagrams, in collaboration with editorial and marketing staff; will crop and otherwise adjust photographs as needed;
  • may take photographs to use as illustrations in print or digital publications
  • prepare files for print production;
  • prepare accessible electronic files for special needs students and for electronic publication;
  • design decisions to maximize informational impact and clarity as well as visual impact will be a key judgement area;
  • compare printing estimates and analyze which printer offers best price/best turnaround time;
  • liaise with printers to ensure that deadlines are met;
  • makes technical decisions, for example, when requesting photographs will need to communicate technical requirements to the supplier (eg, resolution, size, software file format, and so on)
  • may need to negotiate with copyright holders for image reproduction permissions;
  • design and coordinate production of marketing materials used at displays, such as banners, posters, etc
  • make recommendations about design and layout processes to the manager of editorial and production services and senior editors;
  • work will be subject to check by the editorial team and proofread for errors and consistency problems;
  • perform other design and production-related duties as required.

Supervision Received

This person will report to the manager of editorial and production services, who will provide detailed direction on projects during a training period but will then provide general supervision.

Supervision Given

Will liaise with outside suppliers of design elements, such as photographers, and with printers.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Inappropriate judgement exercised by position will cause:

  • errors in printed publications
  • increased costs
  • angry or unhappy authors or publishing clients and resulting sanctions
  • loss of revenue if schedules are not met.

Qualifications

Three year Graphic Design program.    Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience in a book publishing environment preferred.  COMPUTER SKILLS: Mac platform, MS Office (Word and Excel), Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Filemaker Pro database program, Dreamweaver, BBEdit or equivalent; familiar with e-book production. OTHER SKILLS: familiar with metadata creation; familiar with image scanning; familiar with standard editorial mark-up conventions. Excellent written communication skills and strong keyboarding are basic requirements of this job. An organized, flexible, detail-oriented individual who can work within a team environment and juggle multiple projects effectively.
