Job Summary

The Web Editor/Writer is an important position within the Recruitment Marketing and Prospective Student Engagement (RMPSE) team. This position is responsible for the editorial maintenance (editing/publishing) of and the development of marketing and promotional content (writing) for the unit's websites and blog(s), as well as for social media, and other online marketing communications as needed.

The position requires meticulous editorial skills, but also relies heavily on a strong background of technical web experience, preferably in a strategic communications and marketing context.

Working closely with colleagues in the RMPSE team, as well as those in the International Student Initiative team, and Enrolment Services team, the Web Editor/Writer ensures that all web content is accurate, up-to-date, timely, well-written, compelling, and interesting. The Web Editor/Writer also ensures that web content supports key strategic communications, business goals, and objectives; is consistent with UBC's institutional brand while retaining the style and voice of the suite of prospective students marketing and communications materials; is user-centred; and conforms to web standards and best practices.

The RMPSE websites deliver recruitment messages, vital admissions and enrolment information, student and faculty success stories, a glimpse of campus life, program information, and student support and service initiatives for both UBC campuses. You.ubc.ca, UBC's Undergraduate Programs and Admissions website, receives over 1.78 M unique visits per year. The website helps the recruitment and admissions teams achieve UBC's strategic enrolment and business goals to attract, admit, and yield the best and the brightest undergraduate students from BC, Canada, and around the world.

In addition to editing, writing, and publishing duties on the you.ubc.ca website, the Web Editor/Writer contributes clear, accurate, and compelling messaging to other channels, such as blogs, social media, e-newsletters, email campaigns, presentations, slide shows, photo galleries, and video scripts. As with the website, these channels also serve UBC's enrolment and business goals and, as such, are important marketing/communications messages.

The Web Editor/Writer will have a strong foundation in web writing best practices; an exceptional storytelling voice; experience in search engine optimization (SEO), experience reporting based on web analytics/metrics, knowledge of social media optimization (SMO); awareness of usability and accessibility; experience in plain language; and an understanding of why content strategy matters.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Manager, Recruitment Marketing and Prospective Student Engagement and works closely with the Web Marketing Specialist, Digital Marketing Specialist, Marketing Automation and Campaign Specialist, and collaborates with all members of the RMPSE team and key UBC stakeholders.
