KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (DELIVERABLES)

More specifically, as Senior Communications Coordinator, you will:

  • Coordinate the development and execution of comprehensive marketing and communications materials, including speaking notes, media materials, communications plans, PowerPoint slide decks, and marketing collateral in support of Markham’s strategic priorities for business clients.
  • Manage or lead marketing and communications initiatives, with the autonomy to make decisions that have a substantial impact on the Commission and the Corporation.
  • Coordinate, and assist with, issues management and announcement plans for the CAO, City Solicitor, Mayor, Council and Human Resources department on confidential business and in-camera matters.
  • Liaise with the Media Relations Coordinator and coordinate briefing notes, draft responses and prepare background materials relating to issues management.
  • Liaise with the Digital Communications Strategist and City departments to write and prepare web content such as event items, news items and web pages and updates, as well as develop social media campaigns, strategies and content.
  • Liaise with the Special Events Team in coordinating press conferences, corporate events, stakeholder and community consultation programs.
  • Serve as the communications lead and SME on marketing and communications within the assigned corporate projects, initiatives and events, ensuring that communications plans and projects are consistent with Markham’s overall strategic objectives and direction.
  • Attend meetings and liaise with a variety of internal and external groups.
  • Act as alternate business continuity plan lead for the Corporate Communications department as part of the City of Markham’s emergency management program.

Bring your expertise and passion for excellence to this role as Senior Communications Coordinator:

  • You hold a college diploma or university degree in marketing, communications, public affairs, or an allied field of study.

  • Your background includes at least 6 years working in an account executive, client advisor or portfolio manager role, supporting the senior management team.

  • You have a proven track record of providing speech-writing and other communications support, advice and counsel to the most senior levels of organizational leaders.

  • You have specialized knowledge in the theories and techniques of communications, marketing, public relations, public opinion research (e.g. journalism, public and media relations), and strategic communications planning, delivery and evaluation.

  • You can take complex information from multiple sources and present it in understandable format and context.

  • You are known for your strong ability to build rapport, establish trust and confidence, and work collaboratively with diverse teams.

  • You are familiar with multicultural marketing and communications, in particular as they relate to Asian and South Asian audiences.

  • You are adept at establishing excellent client and supplier relationships, and dealing effectively with emerging and complex issues in a fast-paced environment requiring communications support.

  • You have the prioritization and organizational skills needed to ensure products meet deadlines through the approval process.

  • You are ready to be an effective, solutions-oriented member of a professional marketing and communications team.

  • You understand the nature of the role and are prepared to attend meetings, special events and activities outside of regular business hours and some weekends.
