MANAGER, ALUMNI AFFAIRS – Competition Number 16-103

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is currently recruiting for a Manager, Alumni Affairs & Executive Director, KPU Alumni Association to commence employment as soon as possible.  This position is located on our Surrey campus, with travel required between campuses from time to time.

This dual-role position will manage and develop Alumni Relations at Kwantlen Polytechnic University as well as provide dedicated support to the KPU Alumni Association.

The Manager, Alumni Affairs has strategic oversight of Alumni Relations at Kwantlen Polytechnic University  and plays a key role in developing a passionate, connected community of KPU Alumni.  The Manager is responsible for strategic planning in all areas of alumni affairs, with a specific focus on the planning and implementation of programs and projects that increase alumni engagement with KPU.

The Manager, Alumni Affairs will also serve as the Executive Director of the KPU Alumni Association.  As support to the KPUAA Board of Directors, this position provides leadership in the area of governance, , strategic planning and implementation, financial oversight, and program and project support.  The Executive Director ensures the recruitment, training and development of alumni volunteers, including those serving on the Board of Directors, and promotes and advances the goals and aspirations of the Association.

The Manager, Alumni Affairs reports to the Executive Director, External Affairs and is a senior member of the University’s External Affairs team.  The Manager, Alumni Affairs currently has one direct report:  the Advancement Officer – Alumni Relations.

The scope of duties of this critical role includes supervising and directing the activities of staff and volunteers to ensure that there is regular communication with alumni;  ensuring ongoing and meaningful consultation and engagement with the KPUAA board of directors on the planning and direction of Alumni Affairs at KPU; overseeing the department budget and participating in the annual budget development process; supervising and providing guidance to alumni volunteers, working with the KPU Office of Advancement to create a strategic plan for Alumni fundraising and keeping abreast of best practices in Alumni Relations.

As Executive Director of the KPUAA, responsibilities include working closely with the KPUAA Board of  Directors, serving as an ex officio member of the KPUAA board of directors, and fulfilling the ED duties as outlined in the KPUAA Board Governance Manual; ensuring support is provided to arrange the board’s meetings, staff its committees, organize and activate its events and promote strong and productive relationships between its members and KPU’s academic and administrative leaders; acting as a resource to the KPUAA Board of Directors; ensuring that the terms of the Memorandum of Agreement between KPU and the KPUAA are upheld; and suggesting new policy initiatives and reviewing existing policies with the goal of strengthening organizationalperformance..

We are seeking an individual with experience in initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating Alumni engagement programs, a strong working knowledge of BC’s new Societies Act and any other relevant legislation, proven leadership skills covering human, financial and community resources and strong interpersonal and communication skills.  The successful candidate will have a  Bachelor's degree in a related field, Master’s preferred,  a minimum of four years of experience in alumni relations with demonstrated accomplishment in engaging alumni and future alumni, a strong track record of fostering productive relationships with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership, the demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers, demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills and a collaborative problem-solving approach.
