Work with OpenMedia

OpenMedia is an effective, dynamic team of fun humans leading the charge to protect the possibilities of the open Internet. We believe in the power of the Internet to make the world better. To do that, Internet access must be affordable and fast, personal privacy must be respected online, and free expression must be the default mode of the web.

We are a lean digital rights group that punches above our weight. Our community is changing the way the internet comes together to defend our digital freedoms— the freedoms that make the Internet the greatest tool for sharing knowledge and culture since humans first put charcoal to papyrus.

Collaboration and purpose are a big part of our work culture. At OpenMedia, your specific expertise gives you day-to-day autonomy and responsibility, but it won’t keep you locked in a silo.

Our team is full of nice people who are determined to win: we never quite understood the word “capitulate”, and we experience near-allergic reactions to giant corporate or governmental bureaucracies threatening our digital rights.

In short, we are looking for a practical idealist who doesn’t want just any ordinary job. Join us.

Job Description

As our Digital Strategist, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, and evaluating OpenMedia’s digital strategies. Managing Data Intelligence and working with stakeholders from across the organization, you will be responsible for ensuring the health of OpenMedia’s data ecosystem and for turning web metrics and data into actionable insights. You will help the wider team use data insights for successful engagement strategies that grow and deepen our community of digital rights advocates. As our internal champion of data driven approaches, you strive to promote a culture of constant testing and iteration.

Key Responsibilities:

You are the “data-driven” in our data-driven campaigning:

  • You oversee the timely collection and evaluation of data related to all digital activities of OpenMedia (including email and social media communications, community engagement work, advertising, advocacy, and fundraising).

  • You empower our campaigns, communications, and community engagement team members by translating metrics and data into actionable insights, with the aim of systematically increasing our impact and community growth through testing and analysis.

  • You strive to promote a culture of testing and data-driven learning within the organization, by facilitating consistent A/B testing of campaigns, content, designs, and ideas.

  • You develop comprehensive Key Performance Indicators and Thresholds that are aligned with the strategic goals of the organization. You determine what our our key metrics be, and how they tie into the bigger picture.

  • You integrate contact, advocacy, and fundraising data to ensure we have an accurate picture of our supporter journeys and community needs.

  • You coordinate the design, development and implementation of our analytical tools and dashboards.

Data Management

  • You ensure the overall security, health, and integrity of all data assets of the organization

  • You maintain the integrity of supporter data records across multiple CRMs and in cross-organizational collaborations

  • You design, implement, and evaluate supporter segmentation models that help us meet the needs and deepen the engagement levels of our support base

  • You devise and implement internal data flows between the various components of our digital ecosystem (i.e. CRMs, websites, etc.)

  • You train and assist staff with the day-to-day use of data and database systems

Here’s who we hope you are:

  • You want to empower people. At OpenMedia, we are passionate about showing what people can do when they stand together.

  • You care about the open web: You get fired up about all the weird stuff that makes the Internet so great, and you want to make sure it stays open, affordable, and surveillance-free.

  • You are dynamic: This is a fast-paced environment. Really fast-paced. You can jump between tasks, issues, and communication streams with the elegance of a jazz musician.

  • You know how to prioritize strategically. You have a fine-tuned sense of when it’s worth it to “drop everything,” and are OK with the fact that, some days, an early morning development means you won’t get through a single item you put on your to-do list that day.

  • You can laugh at yourself. Sometimes we make mistakes. And when this happens, we all agree to “fail forward” and support each other. This means you’re collaborative, low-ego, and can bring people together to build a “win-win strategy” for good internal and external alliances.

As our Data Analyst, you should have:

  • At least 1-2 years of experience working in a relevant field, bonus points if in the non-profit sector

  • A post-secondary degree or certificate in Digital Analytics, Computer Science, Communications or a relevant field

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Hands-on experience with managing a large-scale supporter database using SaaS CRM (e.g. Salsa, Salesforce, Engaging Networks, Nation Builder)

  • An advanced understanding of analytical and data visualization tools such as Google Analytics (+Google Tag Manager), Optimizely, MS Excel, Tableau Public etc

  • An ability to rely on data to drive decisions and pivot points. This means you lean hard on metrics to gauge progress toward specific outcomes

  • A working knowledge of SQL, PHP, HTML and CSS (bonus: JavaScript)

  • Confidence in analyzing complex data sets and the ability to derive actionable insights

  • A keen interest in the field of digital advocacy and engagement

  • Resourcefulness and willingness to continually learn and grow

  • Bonus points for hands-on experience with Drupal or other content management systems

OpenMedia is committed to fostering a collaborative working environment and to promote opportunities for continuous learning as well as to develop autonomy, mastery and purpose for your daily work activities. You will find a clearly defined career path with plenty of room to grow.

We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce and encourage applications from Aboriginal persons, women, LGBTQ-identified persons, people of colour and persons with a disability.

This is a permanent full-time position with a three-month probation period.

This position will remain open until we find the right candidate. We thank all applicants for their interest in working with OpenMedia. Only those being considered for an interview will be contacted.
