The City of Burnaby is currently recruiting for a Communications Strategist. This is a public relations and communications, technical and administrative position, providing: measurable and accountable strategic communications and issue management planning and tactical services; crisis communications services; and media relations counsel to the Burnaby RCMP Detachment. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and updating the Burnaby RCMP Detachment’s annual communications plan; researching, planning and providing publishing services.  The role will require establishing and maintaining contact with Burnaby Detachment Regular Members, senior managers within the RCMP, policing community, industry, special interest groups, and other provincial and municipal departments as well as the ability to address high profile, RCMP reputation sensitive issues that require immediate solutions. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of a post-secondary program and/or university degree in communications, journalism or related discipline, plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Considerable knowledge of the RCMP and the Burnaby RCMP Detachment’s operations and strategies, combined with skills in journalism, marketing, public affairs and issues management, are required.  Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to provide advice and recommendations to Detachment personnel. Considerable independence, judgement and initiative are required when performing the work.  The ability to design, maintain and enhance the Burnaby RCMP Detachment website as well as create documents for internal and external use is also required. Knowledge of media theories and practices as well as thorough knowledge of social media, public affairs and communication functions of other federal and provincial government ministries and agencies is required. An Enhanced RCMP Security Clearance must be obtained and maintained.
