Communications Manager Full-time, exempt

As Communications Manager, you will lead the school district’s strategic communications both internally and externally. You will be responsible for: building and maintaining positive relationships with all North Vancouver School District stakeholders via proactive and strategic communication that informs, involves and promotes on-going dialogue; promotional activities/marketing/advertising that highlight schools and programs; internal communications; crisis management; media relations; community relations; public engagement; privacy and copyright; and supporting all departments and programs with strategic, as well as reactive, communications needs.

The Communications Manager oversees the delivery of timely and relevant information to various stakeholders through the production and distribution of various forms of digital and print communication. These efforts include both internal and external communications. They also include managing the school district’s websites, intranet and social media channels. You are a skilled communications planner who creates communications plans that tie the various stakeholders together and ensure effective, purposeful and meaningful dialogue. This planning includes strategic public engagement planning and execution on a wide variety of topics, such as strategic planning, budget planning, boundary reviews, and facilities planning. You will also maintain and foster relationships with the community, external agencies and external partners, including participating in community committees and groups.

You will manage crisis and emergency communications for the school district. The Communications Manager is a vital member of the school district's crisis management team. When critical incidents arise, the Communications Manager works with the crisis management team to determine how and what to communicate with stakeholders, and then executes portions of the communications plan. You will also be the spokesperson for the school district and manage media during crisis situations.

Overseeing media relations for the organization, you will manage relations with the news media to promote school district and school accomplishments, explain/provide background on Board decisions, and ensure the school district’s perspective is reported fairly and accurately in news coverage on local education issues. You will manage all media requests across the entire school district and will also take a very proactive approach to media outreach. This involves reaching out to media to obtain coverage of things that highlight the positive things taking place across the school district's 32 schools, Education Services Centre and facilities sites. It also involves responding to media requests, managing media in crisis situations, and being the school district spokesperson. Media relations can be required at any time, including weekends, evenings, nights and early morning hours, so the Communications Manager needs to be flexible with their time. You will also evaluate your media relations efforts through media monitoring.

As Communications Manager you are also responsible for advertising and promotion of the school district. This works includes overseeing brand standards, creating and executing advertising campaigns, and creating promotional material such as brochures, posters, videos, etc. You will assist departments, programs, schools and partners with their advertising and promotional needs. You will support those within the organization to adhere to the brand guidelines.

Reporting directly to the CEO/Superintendent, the Communications Manager provides strategic counsel and ensures proactive stakeholder communications is embedded into the fabric of the organization. You also support the Board in the manner. You will provide counsel to school district management, school administrators, program managers and other employees on ways to improve communication effectiveness.

In partnership with several other department leads, you will ensure the school district upholds student, staff and parent privacy as regulated by the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. You will manage the creation of permission forms to publicly disclose personal information, support FIPPA requests, and ensure staff are trained and supported regarding privacy by providing advice/direction, delivering presentations and creating educational material. You will also ensure adherence to copyright law through informational and training resources/campaigns.

We are looking for a skilled communicator with a Bachelor’s degree in communications or journalism and a minimum of five years’ experience in a communications or public relations role. Preference may be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree or APR certification. The ideal candidate should also have a passion for education, and an understanding of the current issues affecting public education.
