Communications Advisor (Marketing and Digital Media)

Contract Approximately 12 Months

Responsible for providing support in the implementation of strategic communications projects. This includes developing interactive advertising and digital media to convey the appropriate message to target audiences. Responsible for completing various external and internal communications and providing assistance to the Communications Leadership Team on various brand, marketing and communication initiatives. Supports the activities of the Corporate Management Team, Senior Management Team and departments by providing communications advice, consultation and assistance on projects and initiatives, particularly as they relate to marketing and digital media.

Qualifications and experience:

  • University Degree in Marketing, Digital Media Arts or Graphic Design.

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ professional experience in marketing, new media and graphic design in a corporate environment. Municipal experience is considered an asset.

  • IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) or CPRS (Canadian Public Relations Association) accreditationis considered an asset.

  • Thorough knowledge of web, print and digital communication techniques, vehicles and formats and ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.

  • Working knowledge of current and emerging communication and branding strategies, principles, and techniques to promote and  position the corporate initiatives and communication goals.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and guidelines pertaining to written and electronic materials, confidentiality,and news media, including copyright, privacy and accessibility laws.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to thrive in a team environment, and an aptitude for making quick, quality decisions.

  • Excellent understanding and familiarity with brand building and brand management. Strong portfolio of writing samples required.

  • Excellent creative development and editorial skills with proven experience in creating and executing successful e-mail marketing, internet marketing, and direct marketing programs. Including handling corporate communications, original writing and editing and public relations.

  • Ability to analyze situations, apply independent judgment, discretion and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and creative solutions.

  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff and the media, exercising sound judgment, tact and diplomacy. Politically and culturally sensitive.Strong creative and problem-solving skills as well as a solid understanding of writing, grammar and punctuation principles.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently manage design projects successfully, from start to completion.

  • Thorough working knowledge of computer software packages including HTML, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publishing or Quark Express, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, and InDesign. Direct experience withg raphic design, Webpage, and other marketing-related software tools.

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City’s core competencies.

  • A valid Ontario ‘G’ driver’s license, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.

  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, as required.
