Reporting directly to the Member & Internal Communications Manager, the Web Content Specialist will coordinate the planning, maintenance, and accessibility of the website, including layout, positioning, and navigation to ensure that the site reflects APEGA’s brand and professional image. The Web Content Specialist will work collaboratively with representatives of all areas in APEGA to ensure that the website’s content is current, accurate, and consistently edited.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a consistent look and feel by promoting uniform fonts, formatting, icons, images, and layout, and by creating appropriate templates to assist content developers
  • In conjunction with our Graphics Technician, participate in developing and integrating graphical and multimedia components into the website, including audio and video
  • Ensure that sensitive or confidential information is not inadvertently posted on the website
  • Receive and respond to all emails to the webmaster in a timely and courteous fashion
  • Debug performance issues
  • Edit all content to ensure accuracy, plain language, and a single voice according to APEGA’s style guide
  • Regularly test website for improvements and functionality (A/B testing, broken links)
  • Test different browsers and mobile devices to ensure users have similar experiences
  • Adhere to and enforce strict naming conventions
  • Ensure content validates to international standards and protocols, including 508 and accessibility standards

Website Management

  • Identify, recommend, and prioritize new website features and applications with organization leaders
  • Prepare a long-term plan for website development and presence, including standards and guidelines for content, based on organization goals and stakeholder input
  • Chair meetings for the website governance team, comprising content developers from all departments, to ensure content remains current and requirements are scheduled
  • Maintain the website governance manual
  • Track and evaluate new standards, technologies, and trends in website development, design, and delivery to ensure the site remains mobile and multi-platform friendly
  • Set and enforce compatibility and interoperability standards that ensure site accessibility for all users
  • Administer WCMS permissions for all users
  • Train and support content developers in using the WCMS and templates
  • Manage APEGA’s YouTube and Vimeo accounts

SEO

  • Have a sound understanding of on-page SEO best practices, such as content optimization, keyword selection, URL structure, and internal linking
  • Improve organic search results
  • Provide advice on PPC keywords and campaigns
  • Remain current on white-hat and black-hat tactics so as not to violate search engine guidelines

Analysis and Reports

  • Use Google Analytics to track, report, and analyze website traffic and search terms to improve rankings
  • Create reports and dashboards for managers

Skills & Attributes

  • Minimum five years’ experience managing a large website
  • Sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong knowledge of editing and writing practices and standards
  • Awareness of self-regulating professions and regulatory environments considered an asset
  • General knowledge of the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) considered an asset
  • Knowledge of the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act (EGP Act) considered an asset
  • General knowledge with WCMSs (experience with SilverStripe and Joomla would be an asset)
  • Proficient in HTML5 and CSS3
  • Knowledge in graphical and video requirements for websites (resolutions, file formats)
  • Excellent communication skills: both verbal and written
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Dynamic and innovative results-oriented problem solver
  • Demonstrated commitment and focus to delivering exceptional and professional customer service
  • Proven time management skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to present ideas in a non-technical, user-friendly language

  • Demonstrated professionalism, both in demeanour and appearance

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent experience and training) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Communications, or Digital Media is required
