The Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) is a self-sustaining unit within the Schulich School of Business with focus on development, promotion and delivery of executive education programs that span industries and skill centres. Under the leadership of the Associate Director, Open-Reach-Short Programs, the incumbent will contribute to the creation a portfolio of short executive education programs that blend self-paced learning using E-learning modules, assignments and quizzes with classroom sessions. For all existing and NEW programs, the incumbent will be tasked to transform traditional classroom based programs into a new format that significantly shortens the time spent in classroom – achieved by offering a compelling curriculum of e-learning utilizing a set of e-instructional programs - in tandem with classroom days.

The instructional designer will work with the Associate Director, Open-Reach-Short Programs, together with class facilitators who are the subject matter experts, to re-design their programs and create a new set of blended offerings.

Position is to be 1 year contract – with the potential for conversion to a full-time, permanent YUSA 1 position after 1 year review.

Areas of Responsibility:

Works closely with instructors and subject matter experts to translate concepts and contextual material into a wide range of online and print based graphics, videos, presentations, or other illustrative material.
Uses appropriate instructional design methods to assist and advise faculty on the use of instructional technology for creating and aligning course and program-based learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments to meet the needs of SEEC blended learning programs and their desired teaching outcomes.

In collaboration with the Associate Director, Open-Reach-Short Programs, assists faculty with designing engaging and effective courses, curriculum and instructional activities and materials in a variety of formats, including print, graphics, audio, video animation and multimedia. Communicates effectively with faculty and staff individually and in groups. Develops effective and collaborative working relationships with faculty and identifies objectives and develops/recommends appropriate learning strategies. 20%

Develops materials to support teaching and learning that are functional, intuitive, informative, and consistent with sound instructional design principles. Works collaboratively with faculty and Open Enrollment staff to assist in the production of courses in a variety of instructional formats. Develops and provides recommendations for sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, communications, design of course materials and activities and interface design. Determines instructional effectiveness of course materials that are developed.

Develops and maintains a repository of sharable learning objects within SEEC. Keeps abreast of industry best practices and trends in instructional technology and make recommendations to support the use of instructional technology at SEEC. 30%

Designs SEEC standards for blended instructional design, level of complexity of e-modules, Level and style of interactivity, and usage of Learning Management Systems. Continually explores new technologies for potential application to instructional problems. Keeps abreast of industry and sector trends as well as best practices. Provides training to faculty and staff on creation of learning objects or modification of learning objects to meet their instructional needs. 15%

Works with a variety of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and sets up all blended programs within an LMS administrative system to ensure smooth program delivery. 10%

Uses project management methodologies, to ensure successful completion of all projects. Works in a team-based setting to develop project plans for e-learning initiatives. Writes communications and provides estimates for project completion. Defines project success criteria and informs involved parties throughout project life cycle. Contributes to budget proposals, monitors and tracks finances. Serves as point-of-contact to faculty and Open Enrollment staff during the development of course materials, including project lead and team member contact on track and on time. Follows-up with stakeholders as required, keeps projects on track and on time. Works effectively with multi-skilled teams to develop instructional resources 15%

Actively participates in the development and training of faculty and staff in course design and the use of technology. Makes presentations on instructional strategies to various teaching formats. Promotes use of instructional technology by developing and delivering workshops and presentations. Provides sufficient training and tools for faculty to work independently in creation of courses. Develops supporting documentation and learning solutions in all required delivery formats (instructor-led training, eLearning, webinars, etc) for effective pedagogical practices. 5%

Qualifications:

Minimum level of formal education required:

Community College Diploma – Specialization in communications, digital media. Formal training in Instructional Design techniques and authoring languages is mandatory.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience required:

Minimum 4 years of direct current experience creating a range of media for multiple course formats e.g., face-to-face, blended and online courses, preferably in an academic institution. This experience includes: developing instructional materials using a range of media and applications; creating multimedia applications, including digital imagery, video and web design; using collaboration tools, web conferencing, creating video, audio, and multimedia; experience with digital photography, videography, sound recording, and sound editing desired; creating content for use within LMS (Moodle would be an asset); web design, including wireframing and markup languages including HTML, XML, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); storyboards and scriptwriting; creating SCORM packages, LTI, and authoring tools for instructional purposes; collaborating with and coaching faculty on the implementation of instructional technologies for course development; having a demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding service and support to faculty and staff possessing varying degrees of technology comfort level; having applied knowledge of AODA standards.

Skill required:

  • Advanced knowledge of educational/instructional technology, software, and multimedia development on various platforms;
  • Advanced knowledge of learning theories and Instructional design methodologies;
  • Proficient in multimedia/Web e-learning development using packages such as the Adobe eLearning Suite, i.e., Captivate, Connect, Presenter, Dream Weaver;
  • Proficient in creating and editing images in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or similar software packages;
  • Skill in PHP, and/or MySQL desired;
  • Ability to create high quality documents for print or display on-screen; ability to write clear, concise procedural documentation;
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and sound judgment when recommending viable solutions; knowledge of UI and UX principles would be an asset; Excellent communication skills in order to effectively interact with both technical and non-technical users (written and oral); strong presentation skills with demonstrated ability to conduct training sessions and instruct others;
  • Practical knowledge of formal project management methodologies;
  • Ability to work independently and perform effectively as part of a team; ability to deal calmly and effectively with people;
  • understands the need to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to multi-task and meet long/short term deadlines; set priorities and work effectively under pressure;
  • Ability and willingness to keep abreast of technological developments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, Organizational skills. Formal and technical training and experience in instructional design (ideally in an executive education work environment).
