Ontario’s Greenbelt is the solution for clean air, fresh water and healthy local food. At almost 2 million acres, it is the world’s largest greenbelt preserving productive farmland, forests, and wetlands from urban development. The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation is an independent, charitable organization dedicated to promoting and sustaining Ontario’s Greenbelt. The Foundation supports work to protect and restore our natural environment, strengthen the agricultural sector, and create a pattern of urban settlement that supports the Greenbelt.

Scope of Work:

The successful candidate will report to the Vice President of Marketing and Operations, while working closely with the CEO and other Foundation team members to:

Design

  • Use marketing/strategic briefs to develop engaging creative designs. Visualize, build and create solutions, executing creative concepts across different media.
  • Work with the VP of Marketing and Operations to create innovative designs for print materials including brochures, advertisements, invitations, posters, newsletters, signage, banners, education materials and other promotional materials, ensuring that specified brand identity is maintained through all projects.
  • Design, or manage contract designers, to produce any other promotional materials in support of a variety of programs across the organization in marketing and communications, grants, and research.
  • Prepare artwork for production; work with a variety of suppliers to see projects to completion, with an understanding of file preparation for multiple media formats (print, web, promotional materials, etc).
  • Keep current with changes in graphic design technology.
  • Support all other efforts towards engagement (including general graphics, events and outreach support as required).

Mapping

  • Develop cartographic resources in support of a variety of Foundation projects (including data collection, organization and development, map-making and spatial analysis) as needed.

Signage & Hiking Program

  • Review and update, as necessary, a strategic plan for the signage program with ongoing tracking and evaluation of the success of the program in meeting larger organizational strategic goals.
  • Grow the signage program throughout Ontario’s Greenbelt – both educational and promotional signage in communities, on trails, in public parks, and on roads & highways.
  • Expand the Greenbelt Walks program through the development of a robust hiking strategy towards goals for public outreach and engagement.
  • Engage and maintain relationships with municipalities, government departments, trail associations, conservation authorities, and other key stakeholders as required to secure partnerships for signing initiatives.
  • Conceive of, plan, and help execute events (including outreach to major partners, politicians, stakeholders, and the public) related to signage, hiking, etc.
  • Document all proposed sign locations and completed installations.
  • Conduct all other duties related to signage as directed by the CEO.

Qualifications - The successful candidate will have:

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum BA in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or Graphic Design OR 2-3 years experience in the design field (preference given to candidates with experience in an NGO, Non-Profit, or Public Institution)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Good knowledge of the design process from idea inception, to concept development, through to final production
  • Knowledge of GIS / mapping / cartographic principles
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, community development, or partnership building considered an asset
  • Knowledge of land use planning, environmental, and/or agricultural issues will be considered an asset
  • A valid driver’s license will be considered an asset, though is not mandatory
  • A great sense of humour
