DIRECTOR, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Our client, Baycrest Health Sciences, as part of the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation (“CC-ABHI”), is seeking a Director, Business Development (“Director, Business Development”). Headquartered on a 22-acre campus in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, Baycrest is a global leader in geriatric residential living, healthcare, research, innovation and education, with a special focus on brain health and aging. It combines one of the world's top research institutes in cognitive neuroscience with knowledge exchange, commercialization capacity and clinical centres of excellence focused on mitigating the impact of age-related illness and impairment. The continuum of care system includes residential housing, adult day centres, community outreach programs, outpatient clinics, a 472-bed nursing home and a 300-bed hospital that includes rehabilitation and complex continuing care programs. Founded in 1918 as the Jewish Home for Aged, Baycrest draws inspiration from the ethical and cultural values of its Judaic heritage. In April of 2015, $123.5M in funding was announced for the creation of the Canadian Center for Aging and Brain Health Innovation, a national hub for the development, validation, commercialization, dissemination, and adoption of brain health and seniors products and services, to be led by Baycrest. CC-ABHI, funded by the Federal and Provincial governments, the Baycrest Foundation, and 40 additional public and private sector partners, represents the largest investment in brain health and aging in Canadian history. With its resources and funding the Centre will bring innovative ideas to fruition in order to create immediate benefit for older adults. Baycrest, along with partners that include leading seniors care organizations, is building a national hub and network dedicated being at the forefront of innovation in brain health and seniors care products and services.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Innovation & Chief Technology Officer, this is a newly created strategic leadership role for an authentic, collaborative, passionate and tenacious Director, Business Development.

Located in Toronto, the Director, Business Development will seek out, engage and capture exceptional opportunities; attract and negotiate contracts and partnership agreements with commercial entities, governments, not-for-profit groups and granting agencies, and provide strategic leadership to CC-ABHI’s business development, stakeholder engagement, marketing, and communications efforts. Leading an initial and growing team of 3 direct reports, the Director, Business Development will strive to maximize the tangible and intangible value of CC-ABHI’s brand and will skillfully drive CC-ABHI’s mission by developing and leveraging professional networks to bring exceptional opportunities to fruition. Specifically, the role is mandated with developing and bringing to life a strategy that will identify companies and drive new commercial opportunities that generate revenue for CC-ABHI.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in a dynamic, complex association/organization in research, biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare or another related field where he/she will bring a proven track record of engaging and attracting new customers and opportunities and negotiating a variety of profitable agreements/contracts. He/she will have a Master or Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Business, Science, Healthcare, Engineering or a related discipline. The Director, Business Development will bring demonstrated experience navigating the complexities of driving innovation in the healthcare and/or not-for-profit sector(s) and securing commercial deals with technology and/or healthcare organizations of all sizes.

Critical to success in this role will be the ability of the Director, Business Development to understand his/her role as a valued partner and enabler in furthering CC-ABHI’s mission to support aging and brain health and Baycrest’s mission to provide the highest quality of care to all of its clients. A proven strategic business leader with a strong business orientation, he/she will be skilled at identifying, assessing and negotiating commercial opportunities in order to drive economic as well as scientific and clinical value for CC-ABHI and its’ partners.

Strategically savvy with the highest morals and integrity, the ideal candidate will be skilled at managing and navigating complexity; building trusted, collaborative, and lasting relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally; delivering on innovative, complex and international initiatives; and inspiring others with his/her tenacity, authenticity, passion for the organization, and commitment to achieving CC-ABHI’s commercial objectives. Highly engaging, diligent, trustworthy, and innovative, the incoming Director, Business Development will possess exceptional communication skills as well as the ability to drive seamless execution within a large, complex, multi-stakeholder environment for many years to come.
