Communications and Public Affairs (C&PA) is responsible for managing all internal and external corporate-level communications to employees, shareholders, clients, media, community organizations and the government. This department works closely with the senior executive team, business lines and functional areas to coordinate all strategic communications and messaging. C&PA is part of the Office of the CEO and has enterprise-wide scope.
As a key member of the Public Relations team within C&PA, this individual is responsible for supporting and developing effective media communications strategies for CIBC initiatives and issues.
Job Overview
Reporting to the Director, Public Relations, this position is responsible for supporting communications to:
- help increase public understanding of CIBC’s strategic objectives, priorities and achievements through a broad range of media relations activities.
- manage CIBC’s media monitoring initiatives
- provide writing, editing, strategic counsel and advice to internal clients, including senior and line management, on positioning and tactics regarding media activities.
- develop strategies and execute plans to respond to issues and protect/enhance CIBC’s reputation as a successful, ethical and responsible corporation.
What You’ll be Doing
- Provide support in developing effective media communications strategies for CIBC initiatives and issues. This includes researching issues and developing various communications vehicles including news releases and speeches, press conferences and events, drafting briefing notes, preparing participants and managing media interviews.
- Support public relations for retail banking, economics, wealth management and mutual fund businesses.
- Build media profile for wins and successes that align to key business priorities.
- Respond to media enquiries and arrange interviews as appropriate.
- Support the development and execution of plans that will increase CIBC’s positive media coverage.
- Track the bank’s media monitoring and analysis activities.
- Provide strategic communication counsel and advice to line management and functional groups on CIBC activities or issues that have the potential to attract media attention.
- Develop effective positioning on a broad range of issues and ensure that these are delivered professionally in a way that portrays CIBC as positively as possible within the media.
- Develop and maintain open relationships with media representatives.
- Support the development and execution of plans that will increase CIBC’s positive media coverage on existing properties such as CIBC Run for the Cure and on new business and community initiatives.
- Lead the bank’s media monitoring and analysis activities.
- Provide strategic communication counsel and advice to line management and functional groups on CIBC activities or issues that have the potential to attract media attention.
- Develop effective positioning on a broad range of issues and ensure that these are delivered professionally in a way that portrays CIBC as positively as possible within the media.
- Develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of individuals across the bank – both regionally and by function.
- Develop and maintain open relationships with media representatives
What We’re Looking For
- Professional communicator with solid judgment in dealing with difficult communication issues.
- Writing and copyediting skills, attention to detail is essential.
- Proven ability to develop communications strategies and deliver them effectively.
- Experience in journalism and/or public relations.
- Strong understanding of the media relations function.
- Excellent phone, interviewing, presentation, writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Knowledge of mutual fund industry, asset management and investment advisory business is essential and key to this function.
- Knowledge of economics, current affairs, political, social and business issues, and the news media.
- Strategic planning and project management skills.
- Ability to manage competing/demanding priorities.
- Ability to excel within a team environment through collaboration and cooperation
- Good understanding of financial matters, such as how to read a balance sheet/ income statement.
- Social media skills are an asset.
