The Senior Advisor, Communications establishes and manages the internal communications function at Seaspan with some support to external communications when required. This involves developing an internal communications strategy in consultation with the Vice-President, Human Resources and the senior leadership. The Senior Advisor provides strategic communications advice in support of employee engagement and change management in addition to supporting our Government Relations’ team and some external communications across our Marine group.  The Senior Advisor will also play a key role in ensuring that internal communications efforts appropriately include and engage staff in regional offices

The Senior Advisor, Communications reports directly to the Vice President, Human Resources.  This position has one direct report and may also oversee the work of several external Contractors and/or Consultants.

Duties/Accountabilities

  • Developing and maintaining communications’ strategies and tools to support internal stakeholder needs.
  • Accountable for all internal communications and may assist with external media relations and events as required.
  • Assists the Marine group with external communications as needed;
  • Supports the development and execution of the internal and external communications strategy to ensure the communication of Company programs, events, employee engagement and community engagement activities are consistently delivered and understood;
  • Designs and executes innovative tactics to develop and distribute key messages and measures the effectiveness of key communications mediums;
  • Analyzes employee feedback mechanisms and interpret data to recommend best practices and new approaches for internal communications;
  • Supports the development of the internal Communications team to ensure the team is evaluating deliverables and adjusting to meet the business needs;
  • Supports and contributes to development and continuous improvement of the organization’s internal communications channels including intranet, digital boards, print, social media and all other electronic communications;
  • Reviews communication across the organization to develop, maintain and communicate standards for internal communications, focussing on clarity, simplicity, style, consistency as well as brand identity and delivery;
  • Guides the creation of communication materials, utilizing multiple channels and mediums (digital media, brochures, presentations, newsletters, surveys, posters, trade show collateral, video scripts, production storyboards, website);
  • Manage, develop and support internal engagement initiatives in conjunction with Human Resources;
  • Assist with the Company’s external communications to ensure consistency in key messaging and alignment with brand and corporate direction;
  • Proofread, copy edit and review marketing and communication materials, including website, trade events, career fairs and other documents, to ensure correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and brand standards have been applied;
  • May assist in preparing key messaging for press releases including revising or creating marketing or communications’ material and assisting in external events when required;
  • Has accountability for the company website content;
  • Responsible for the delivery of internal events;
  • Ensures the design of marketing materials including advertisements, marketing brochures, promotional items, exhibits and photography are inline with Corporate standards and brand;
  • Manages vendor relationships specifically for internal communications yet also relating to brand and image.
  • Is accountable for developing and managing Seaspan’s corporate communications budget;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Required Experience

  • A post-secondary degree in Business, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Human Resources.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ of relevant experience in internal communications or media relations, particularly as a business partner.
  • A strong background in public and media relations - including social media - ideally with a minimum of 4 years’ experience working in an externally facing media role for a large firm.
  • Experience leading and developing internal communication programs and campaigns.
  • Significant experience in delivering contemporary communications’ programs and services to a broad and diverse employee workforce.
  • Considered an asset: Supervisory experience.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Superior English writing, editing and verbal communication skills;
  • Proficient in web-based technologies as well as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe and Database Management;
  • A very strong and broad understanding of how the media works and thorough knowledge of marketing and communications;
  • Ability to develop effective messaging and communication materials;
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking and time management capabilities.
  • Works well under pressure and has the ability to meet strict, daily deadlines.
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain relationships both internally with Managers and Employees and externally with outside vendors.
  • Focus on internal clients with an understanding of external impacts.
  • Exceptional spirit of collaboration.
  • Aptitude for interpersonal communications as well as a proven ability to forge cross-functional connections.
  • Experience in communications to support and implement change is an asset.
  • Social media savvy with exceptional understanding of online communications tools and tactics.
