The department ensures that UVic’s communications and marketing initiatives are aligned with the needs of the university’s most significant target audiences, and focused on what makes UVic distinct.

Communications + Marketing leads the development and promotion of a consistent institutional narrative, a compelling and strategic long-term positioning for UVic, and an institutional communications and marketing plan aimed at promoting UVic’s interests in the competition for students, faculty, staff, financial support and institutional reputation.

With the direct guidance of the university’s Executive Council, the department works with academic and administrative units as partners, to make the most effective use of university resources to advance unit and institutional priorities.

Communications + Marketing is organized into six highly collaborative teams arranged around its main areas of responsibility: Media Relations and Public Affairs, Strategic Marketing, Internet Strategies, Creative Services, Internal Communications and Publications, and Administrative Support.

Reporting to the Manager, Strategic and Brand Marketing, the Production Manager works as an integral member of the Strategic Marketing team to manage the workflow, scheduling, tracking and production of all marketing projects.

The position is responsible for assessing project and resource requirements, developing work back schedules, estimating and negotiating costs and overseeing delivery of materials.

The position is the key point of contact with UVic Printing Services and with all external print and production vendors.

The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the team’s project management system, including inputting all workflow information, archiving and storage.

This position requires an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline with a minimum five years’ experience in a production management role, preferably in a marketing environment.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

In addition this position requires:

  • Knowledge of project and production management theory, strategy and best practices as it relates to communications, marketing, graphic design, photography and video
  • Knowledge of communications and marketing practices, procedures and products, including market research, marketing plans, briefs, ad plans, client management and annual planning.
  • Must have knowledge of graphic design and photography principles and practice
  • Knowledge of print management, including pre-flighting, paper stock, colour and printing methods.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to synthesize and share information, so that each team member has the necessary information they need to perform their duties, and understands their role within the project and how it contributes to project success.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, good judgment and ability to exercise initiative are critical.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with team and clients, using diplomacy and tact to navigate difficult and confidential matters.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proven track record achieving project goals on time and produce deliverables of a high quality.

Assets or Preferences:

  • Knowledge of copywriting and video is considered an asset
